Coming to Terms: Type 2 Diabetes

Over the past year, life has taken some unexpected turns for me, turning into quite the journey. We made the significant decision to sell our home, which had served us well but no longer suited our changing needs. After a thorough search, we finally found a new house that felt just right and moved in December. Thankfully, we are now settled in nicely and beginning to truly appreciate our new space.

However, this transition wasn't without its challenges. During the move, I experienced feeling unwell, something that seemed to have happened regularly for me since my first bout of COVID. Then, in late January, I had an extended bout of the flu, which lasted over six weeks, leaving me feeling drained and unwell. Making matters worse, I was also dealing with high blood pressure. As a result, when I continued to feel sluggish and tired—along with increased irritability—I blamed it on my blood pressure being out of balance. Despite noticing these persistent symptoms, I ignored other warning signs and stubbornly resisted seeking medical advice sooner.

About a month ago, I finally scheduled an appointment with my doctor to renew my blood pressure medication. Naturally, she recommended a series of tests to check my overall health. The diagnosis that followed was a shock: Type 2 Diabetes. Coming to terms with this new reality was an emotional journey; I experienced a whirlwind of confusion, frustration, and even a touch of fear. It was overwhelming to suddenly have to manage glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, and medication routines. However, as I began to establish a routine, I realized that managing my diabetes isn't about perfection but rather about cultivating awareness, resilience, and celebrating small victories along the way.

The Effects of Diabetes

My diagnosis hasn't defined who I am, but it has definitely encouraged me to refocus and reassess various aspects of my life. I’ve become more proactive about learning about diabetes. I thought I understood what it meant, especially since I have family members who have faced similar challenges, but I discovered there was so much more I needed to learn.

Throughout this journey, the love and support from my sister, who also has Type 2 Diabetes, has been invaluable. Her experience and encouragement have given me strength as I navigate these changes.

To anyone reading this who might be newly diagnosed or supporting someone with diabetes, please know that you are not alone. Remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is still a step towards healing and better health. Embrace the journey, lean on your support system, and take it one day at a time.
